Zambia
The Hope for African Children Initiative has been
operational in Zambia since 2002 and draws its membership from World
Vision International (World Vision), Plan International (Plan),
Care International (Care), Family Health Trust (FHT), Society for
Women and AIDS in Africa-Zambia (SWAAZ) and the Zambia Interfaith
Networking Group on HIV/AIDS (ZINGO). Assistance to vulnerable children
and their families includes education, health, clothing, economic
strengthening and psychosocial support.
HACI Zambia is also involved in advocacy with a view to reducing
the spread of HIV/AIDS and the accompanying stigma, and galvanizing
support for children made vulnerable by the disease. Its principal
strategy is to provide technical support and resources to partner
organizations working within communities to care for and support
vulnerable children and their families.
HACI Zambia implements its programs around the four core objectives
of the initiative, namely:
· Creating awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding
HIV/AIDS
· Extending the parent-child relationship e.g. encouraging
early treatment of opportunistic infections
· Encouraging positive living and preparing families for
transition e.g. providing counseling and economic support
· Ensuring the future of the child by providing access to
basic education, life skills and health
While the long term desire of HACI is to implement its activities
in all the 9 provinces of Zambia, it has presence in 15 districts
of the following provinces; Eastern-, Central, North Western and
Southern. HACI-Zambia is supporting an increasing number of local
community-based organizations and faith-based organizations for
scaling up sustainable programs targeting orphans and other vulnerable
children and developing tools to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness
of the support.
