HACI Happenings
ICASA
Hope for African children Initiative took part in the 13th International
Conference on AIDS and Sexually transmitted Diseases (ICASA) held
in Nairobi, Kenya in September 2003. HACI set up an exhibition booth,
which served as an avenue for educating people on its programs and
those of partners and community-based organizations, which have
benefited from its grants. It also organized a high-profile satellite
meeting as a means to networking with donors, partners and other
stakeholders with a view to highlighting the challenges faced by
orphans and vulnerable children and exploring areas of collaboration.
The meeting attracted more than 300 participants.
Support to International Women’s
AIDS run
The Hope for African Children Initiative provided financial and
logistical support to the International Women’s AIDS run,
which took place in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, a day before
the start of ICASA. The run, which attracted hundreds of participants
led by Kenya’s First Lady Lucy Kibaki, helped to raise awareness
of HIV/AIDS and the role played by women and children in caring
for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
Livelihoods Workshop
The Hope for African Children Initiative and CARE organized a workshop
in Kampala, Uganda, in November 2003 to find the best approach to
the implementation of livelihood programs for children and families
impacted by HIV/AIDS. The objective of the workshop was to share
experiences, best practices and lessons learnt in the implementation
of livelihood programs. The participants were exposed to different
livelihood models out of which important lessons and practices were
identified.
Education Workshop
A HACI workshop aimed at identifying ways of increasing orphans
and vulnerable children’s access to quality education was
held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa in March 2004. Its purpose
of the workshop was to share experiences, best practices and lessons
in the implementation of education programs for children affected
by HIV/AIDS.
