EthiopiaHACI Ethiopia was launched in 2004, increasing the number of HACI Program countries to nine. Its partnership comprises Save the Children, CARE International, Plan, World Vision, Ethiopian Interfaith Forum for Development Dialogue and Action (local chapter Of World Conference of Religions for Peace), Society for Women and AIDS in Africa Ethiopia and Mary Joy Aid Through Development. HACI Ethiopia currently operates in three regional states namely: Addis Ababa, Oromiya and Southern Nations and Nationalities People Regional State. The population size and geographic stretches of these areas are very significant in the national statistics. HACI Ethiopia operates through ten local NGOs running twelve project sites and supporting over 200 community-based organizations in 113 sub-districts. Due to high HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in these areas, the population of orphans and other vulnerable children is high compared to other regions. Compounding the problem is the mass influx of vulnerable children from neighboring and distant areas in search of jobs, livelihood, and education. HACI Ethiopia programs have benefited more than 40,000 vulnerable children directly and 200,000 indirectly. Its interventions include awareness building and advocacy, educational support, nutritional and health support, psychosocial support, livelihood and income generation activities and capacity building. HACI Ethiopia aggressively works on building the capacities of local NGOs and community-based organizations through training, financial and technical assistance/support that boosts their service delivery; equipping them with local resource mobilization skills and expanding their reach; and eventually addressing the issue of sustainability. Enterprising on the solid relationship that exists between the Idirs (grassroots organizations set-up for funeral purposes but have now expanded its objectives to focus on social development activities) and the community, relentless effort is being made to sensitize communities to own and internalize the issues of vulnerable children and HIV/AIDS. HACI-Ethiopia, as a lead organization in issues affecting orphans and other vulnerable children, strives to establish a strong national network system to address their problems.
